Welcome

Welcome to the website for "Abolitionism and the Arts in the Long Eighteenth Century," a project stemming from an interdisciplinary symposium that was held at Columbia University on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The symposium was organized by members of the Columbia University Seminar in Eighteenth-Century European Culture (Julia Hamilton-Louey, Stephanie Insley Hershinow, and Patricia A. Matthew) in collaboration with the Department of Music at Goldsmiths, University of London (represented by Berta Joncus).

One of the goals of the project is to create new resources for students and scholars interested in connections between abolitionism and the arts. To that end, the video of the concert can be found here. If you would like to share a link to a piece of scholarship, recording, or primary source that has been particularly useful for your own work on abolitionism and the arts, please email Julia Hamilton-Louey at [email protected].
